Today is the 69th anniversary of D-Day, The allied invasion of Normandy. D-Day took place June 6th 1944 on the beaches of Normandy. In this picture from CBC News Canadian troops and landing craft occupy Juno beach and shattered German defenses within hours. Read more about it here, CBC News.

Over 160,000 troops landed that day, assisted by over 5,000 ships, aerial bombardment, gliders and paratroopers. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives and many thousands more would follow as the invasion succeeded and troops began to push German forces eastward, eventually leading to the Allied victory in 1945
