The Pirate 4×4 forum is usually made up of hardcore rock crawlers. However, they started a desert and short course racing section about a year ago and it is picking up in popularity. This thread on desert racing Jeeps has some great photos of Jeep CJ-5 and CJ-7’s. Guys like Don Adams and Ray Russell were some of my icons when I was growing up.
I love those old rims. I have seen a set of those for sale, along with a jeep, about 2 years ago in Oregon. Other than that I haven’t seen those rims at all. Of course, I love those X Dog tires. I remember going to summer convention back in the mid 70s in Pendleton, Or, and seeing those for the first time. They were so cool 🙂
David, thanks for the comment. Desert Dogs and terra tires was “THE” combination from what I remember. I have never seen those rims, though.
I loved seeing the PICTURES…I have more of them too!
OMG! Loved those pictures, that’s my Dad!
Glad you liked the photos. Karen, we would all love to see more! Feel free to email me at weskibble@offroadracecanada.com
I raced against these guys back on the day. Great to see the photos.
I did some racing with Doug Robinson in the early’80’s. Ray built Dougs CJ. I drove to Tulare with Doug one day to check on the Jeep. Ray was giving it a go over. Got to meet Ray. I’ll always remember the way he said “bizarre”. It was “beeezarre”. Later on I bought Dougs first car trailer. It was in Tulare at the time. A buddy and I grabbed a 12-pack of beer and drove down to pick it up late one Saturday night. Ray said he would leave it out for us. We get there and start hooking up the trailer and headlights appear. It’s Ray. He drove up to check on us. We talked a bit then left. The next day I go to Dougs. Doug tells me that we pissed off Ray! I’m puzzled by this. Turns out Ray was pissed off at us cause we didn’t offer him a beer! Lol
