2019 Sand Sports Super Show

The Sand Sports Super Show is a yearly event that takes place at the OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa in September.  Years ago the show primarily featured the latest and greatest sand cars built by the top fabrication shops in the industry. Although there are still some great looking sand cars built by companies like Funco, Tatum and Buckshot the show has been taken over by the UTV craze that has happened in recent years.  Just like all car shows and expos we searched out for the vintage off road rides as well as our other favorite rigs that we came across to share with our audience.

Be sure to check back in a couple of weeks for our coverage of the Off-Road Expo in Pomona, CA and the SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas in November.

The Dirt Alliance booth had a great looking Ford Bronco on display. It’s built with bypass and coil-over shocks, bead lock wheels with BFG projects and a full cage.

NORRA has been running their multiple day Mexican 1000 rally each year in April/May.  This year they are featuring a new event called the NORRA 500 next month.  We can’t wait to see how this new event turns out.

Long time desert and short course racer Curt LeDuc recently saved this Jeep from rotting in his back yard and got it running just in time to take to the Crandon short course race a couple weeks ago.  It was originally built in 1978 and it has a Corvette rear end and front center section. Curt told us that in the 70’s he didn’t even own a grinder. He built this with a cutting torch and conduit bender in his garage.

Vintage sand cars are always fun to look at and I’m sure are a blast to drive in the dunes. Although I’m sure they are very sketchy compared to modern cars built today.

This Genright built Jeep in the Vision X booth is an amazing build and we were told that it was well into the 6 figure range once it was completed.

This VW Thing on display at the ebay Motors booth features a full cage with coil-over suspension, seats with 5-point harnesses, a fuel cell and bead lock wheels.. It’s powered by a GM LSJ 2.0L supercharged ecotech engine.

Robby Gordon’s Gordini that he raced multiple times at the Dakar Rally in South America.

In addition to the Gordini, Robby brought out a full fleet of UTV’s along with their new 4-seater that they are building 250 of in 2020. During the show they pre-sold 113 of them which is amazing.
